The United Network of Young Peacebuilders (UNOY Peacebuilders) is a global network of 42 youth-led peace organizations and 300 affiliates, active in the field of peacebuilding and conflict transformation. The UNOY Peacebuilders as a network organization contributes to the work of its members and affiliates in two fundamental ways: ‘Capacity building’ and ‘Advocacy and Campaigning’. It also engages in a range of additional activities to support these two key functions: Networking; sharing of information; advice and support through a pool of resource persons; research; fundraising and administrative support. Since its inception in 1989, the United Network of Young Peacebuilders has organized a series of international work group meetings, training seminars and regional/global conferences. In the past, a major focus has been on peacebuilding activities in Eastern Europe and Africa. The UNOY Peacebuilders has been actively campaigning for promoting the UN declared International Decade for a Culture of Peace and Non-violence (2001-2010) and is promoting the values and principles gathered in the Earth Charter, as a guiding ethical framework for action.

Peacebuilding Centre for the Horn of Africa (PCHA)

The Peacebuilding Centre for the Horn of Africa (PCHA)

Executive Summary

The Peacebuilding Centre for the Horn of Africa (PCHA) endeavors to develop the capacity and performance of national associations, political parties and non-governmental organizations (NGOs), by promoting institutional forms of action, goal oriented planning and a strategic commitment to sensible policy responses. Often local organizations lack effective structures or basic administrative skills and therefore remain weak, incapable of stimulating social, political or economic change. The Centre, an independent initiative of private citizens from the Horn of Africa, is an affiliate of a non-profit trust fund, the Sudan Strategic Studies Trust (SSST).  SSST is registered in the United Kingdom and Eritrea as an independent non-governmental organization (NGO) and is concerned with peace building and stability. While maintaining a regional focus, PCHA will pay particular attention to organizations in those countries undergoing severe crisis, namely Somalia and Sudan.

Any cursory glance of the Horn of Africa reveals that most of its countries suffer from worsening living conditions and a marked deterioration in the quality of life. The Horn of Africa has witnessed a spur of new conflicts and tensions, making no country in the region free from the risk of the ignition of war. Never before has the tension been so high and unstable. In the Horn, there are countries that suffer from internal, ethnic and economic conflicts while others suffer from conflict with their neighbors. Examples of ethnic/economic conflicts include that of Sudan (Darfur), in Ethiopia (the Oromo and Ogaden regions) and within Somalia. There are also cross territorial conflicts, such as that between Eritrea and Ethiopia and Somalia and Ethiopia.
